AGE AND BEHAVIOR: LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE IN GENERAL
Just as the speed with which an older person can respond limits his ability to demonstrate what he has learned, but in itself is not regarded as a cognitive factor, so is it with motivation. Motivation in learning is important, but it is a factor apart from learning ability. It is often presumed that older people are less motivated than younger people to perform well in laboratory situations where there is little that is meaningful to them. Such a lack of motivation could explain performance deficits in later life.
Actually, there are more data which argue an opposite position than there are data which support this belief; the definition of motivation is important here. One definition includes a general involvement in the laboratory situation. The more aroused a person is psychophysiologically, the more involved he is thought to be. Studies of arousal states suggest that older people are often inappropriately and overly aroused, and their performances suffer accordingly. When these arousal states are reduced by drugs or by adaptation to the laboratory situation, their performances have been seen to improve.
Older people also seem to be reluctant to respond if they think they may be wrong—they make the omission error. This reluctance can make them appear poor in learning when it is not so. One study showed that by rewarding all responses, right or wrong, and thus discouraging the omission error, the elderly improved their learning rates.
When motivation is defined, not in terms of a general arousal state or a reluctance to respond, but in terms of a specific interest in the given task, the role of motivation in later life is less clear. The meaningfulness of the task is a factor in this type of motivation. The more meaningful the task, the more personally relevant, the higher the motivation is expected to be.
