AGE AND BEHAVIOR: AIDS AND TYPES OF LEARNING – CATEGORIZATION - MEDIATIONAL TECHNIQUES

VERBAL AND VISUAL IMAGERY - ELDERLY SUBJECTS AND MEDITATION
Further analysis suggested that the elderly subjects were aided by the mediators in their errors of omission, not commission. Among the interpretations that Canestrari offered was that if the error of omission reflects a cautiousness such that the older persons will not make a response unless confident of its correctness, the mediators might have raised their levels of confidence.
Canestrari's oldest subjects were aged 50 to 73 years. A study by Mason and Smith (1977) suggests that it may be the younger people in the age bracket who benefited most from mediation. They tested three age groups (20-39, 40-59, and 60-80) for free recall of words in a list, and only the middle-aged benefited from instructions to use visual imagery. The investigators conjectured that the young use mediators spontaneously, while the old are less willing or less able to do so. Mediation instruction may well be most useful for the middle-aged.
A study by Treat and Reese (1974) suggested that instructions to use mediators may be as helpful, or even more helpful, to the elderly as providing the mediators for them. They tested two groups of people, one aged about 30 and the other about 70 years. There were three subgroups of each age: One had to learn paired-associates with no instruction regarding mediators; another group was told to generate their own image-mediators; and a third group was given the mediators for learning. Unlike Canestrari, it was seen that both the young and the old benefited from instruction. The older subjects benefited from their own image-mediators, not those provided by the experimenter. In this study, stimulus pacing schedules were varied. The self-generated imagery was useful in learning by the elderly when there was a sufficiently long period of time allowed for response, not when the pacing schedule was very rapid.
