AGE AND BEHAVIOR: AIDS AND TYPES OF LEARNING – CATEGORIZATION - MEDIATIONAL TECHNIQUES - THE METHOD OF LOCI
Entertainers on the stage have been seen to demonstrate great feats of memory. They have been seen to call for a long list of items and later repeat these items perfectly and in the order they were brought up. One of the techniques the entertainers use is called "the method of loci," a technique known to the ancient Greeks. This technique was used by Robertson-Tchabo, Hausman, and Arenberg (1976) in studying older people.
They carried out two studies, both with similar results. First, people mostly in their 60s and 70s were given a list of 16 nouns to learn and remember in anv order they chose. Their performances were recorded.
Next, they were asked to picture in their minds the interior of their homes and take an imaginary walk through them, stopping at 16 places —places such as the entrance foyer, rooms, furniture, or anything else in the rooms. The only rule was that these locations must be sites that would be reached in succession on their imaginary walk.
When this progression of loci was well rehearsed and fixed in mind, the subjects associated each of 16 noun-words with each of the 16 loci. The subjects were asked to picture the word and the stopping places together, "for example, an 'alligator' in the 'entrance hall.'" The word could be pictured in any way, even silly ways, just so long as it was pictured with the site. Rehearsal of sites and associated noun-words was carried out in each of three days, with a test of the noun-list following. The elderly subjects recalled more of the 16 words after their "walks" through their homes than they had at first without the aid of the method of loci. Further, they recalled more than a control group who had not been taught by the method of loci.
On the day following, when tests were again made, it was found that the subjects did not resort to this mnemonic, unless instructed to do so. Thus it seems the method of loci can be helpful to the aged, but it is not one that is used by them spontaneously.
