AGE AND BEHAVIOR: AIDS AND TYPES OF LEARNING – CATEGORIZATION - MEDIATIONAL TECHNIQUES VERBAL AND VISUAL IMAGERY

The data bearing on mediational techniques are not unlike much of the data on categorizing. Hulicka and Grossman (1967) reported that older people, unlike younger ones, do not tend to make use of such mediational techniques, unless instructed to do so. When instructed on these techniques, however, they improve considerably. In fact, when Hulicka and Grossman compared elderly people (mean age 74 years) with young ones (mean age 16 years) in paired-associate learning, they found the elderly improved more than the young when instructions in mediational techniques were given, although they did not reach the same level of performance. Hulicka and Grossman (1967) believed that, "Part of the learning deficit observed in old . . . subjects. . . may be due to the failure to use mediational techniques spontaneously." Not all studies point to this (e.g., Bruning, Holz-bauer, and Kimberlin, 1975; Nebes and Andrews-Kulis, 1970), but most do (e.g., Rowe and Schnore, 1971).
Perhaps the reason that older people do not use such techniques spontaneously is because they tend not to be very able in forming mediators and in integrating them with the material to be learned. As Canestrari suggested, older people—as judged from their performances on a variety of different types of tests—show an "associative impoverishment." Older people not only find it harder than do younger ones to form mediators, it takes them longer. It is not surprising, therefore, that they use them less often.
