AGE AND BEHAVIOR: AIDS AND TYPES OF LEARNING – CATEGORIZATION - DIFFERENTIAL BENEFITS FOR THE ELDERLY – THE STUDY BY HULTSCH
One of the studies by Hultsch (1971) again pointed to the role of organization in learning. He tested subjects in three age groups, this time people in their 20s, 40s, and 60s. Half the people of each age were given a sorting task and half a different task, and then all were given a learning task. The sorting task provided information on how to organize the information in the learning task which followed, but the non-sorting task did not do this.
For each age group, the sorting task was helpful in the learning of the task which followed, but it became more helpful as age increased. It may be concluded from this that information on how to organize material for learning and recall is relatively more important for older people than for younger ones because younger people may develop such information on their own, without help from the experimenter.
This was seen in yet another study by Hultsch (1975) who presented 40 words for learning, four from each of 10 different categories. The words were presented to men and women of three age groups, 18-34, 50-64, and 65-83 years. He asked half the people in each age group to recall the words after providing them with the category names. The other half were also asked to recall the words, but the categories were not provided. The oldest group benefited most from the category names; the names served to organize the information and served as cues in recall.
