AGE AND BEHAVIOR: AIDS AND TYPES OF LEARNING

It was said at the very beginning of the previous chapter that learning and memory are operationally indistinguishable but that a distinction is made nevertheless because it is convenient to do so. It is made on the basis of how much organization is involved in processing the information, i.e., on how much meaning is derived from the material to be learned. An example was given of the word "table." It will long be remembered what the word means, what categories of events or items relate to it (semantic memory), but remembering whether it was one of the words in a list recently seen (episodic memory) is not long-term. The present chapter focuses on how to process information or fix memories for longer-term recall. Thus, the present chapter continues with the mainly episodic studies of the previous chapter and emphasizes how to shift from episodic to semantic memory.
It was seen in the previous chapter that, in typical laboratory studies of learning, elderly people perform less well than do younger people. It was also seen that the experimenter could help the older person to perform better by doing several things: he could slow the pacing of the experimental events; he could reduce, when indicated, the subject's level of autonomic arousal; and he could present more relevant and meaningful tasks.
The present chapter focuses on additional factors which aid the elderly in their performances. The discussion then continues with a description of studies that demonstrate the large variety of learning situations that show age trends from which important inferences may be drawn.
