AGE AND BEHAVIOR: NECESSARY DISTINCTION IS MADE BETWEEN LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE

A necessary distinction is made between learning and performance. The disctinction is based upon a cognitive ability in the case of learning and an ability to express what is known in the case of performance. There is little disagreement regarding performance decrements in later life, but there is disagreement whether there is decline with age in learning ability.
It is in the context of verbal learning studies in which there is quick stimulus pacing that the argument for performance deficits in later life, rather than learning deficits, receives its greatest support. The research strategy has been to vary both the amount of time the stimulus is available for study and the amount of time that is available for response. The general finding is that elderly people need more time for responding than typically is provided; they are disadvantaged when this time is not available. When sufficient time for response is available, the performance of elderly people is only slightly inferior, or not inferior at all, to that of young people. The controversy of whether or not learning ability decreases in later life remains unsettled, however, largely on the basis of some data which show that, given a long period of time for response but a rushed period for studying the material, older people perform relatively poorly. The implication is that it takes longer for older people to learn material than it does for younger people.
