AGE AND BEHAVIOR: LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE - TASK MEANINGFULNESS -FAMILIARITY OF THE TASK - STRENGTH OF THE PAIRED ASSOCIATES
Some words go together more than others; for example, TABLE goes with CHAIR more than it does with GLOVE. The associative strength of TABLE-CHAIR is said to be higher than that of TABLE-GLOVE; it is more familiar than TABLE-GLOVE. In this sense, it may be said, the higher the strength of the paired associates in the list, the more familiar, perhaps meaningful, the list.
Several studies compared older and young adult subjects in their ability to learn lists varied with respect to their associative strength (Canestrari, 1966; Kausler and Lair, 1966; Zaretsky and Halberstam, 1968). In each of these studies, the older people were relatively disadvantaged with the lower association-strength pairs. One study varied the associations in three levels with adults of wide age range (Botwinick and Storandt, 1974). No difference among the age groups was seen in learning the high association pairs (e.g., ocean-water), decline was seen beginning in the 40s with the medium pairs (e.g., table-music), and steeper decline with the least meaningful associates (e.g., RW-sugar).
The implication of these results is that the unfamiliar, "meaningless" tasks often used in laboratory investigations may well be an explanation of poor performance levels of older people. However, it will be seen next that task familiarity defined in other ways does not support this proposition.
